We so often talk about where silk comes from, its properties and how to style items made from it. But it is important to care for silk products in a way that preserves their colour, texture, and overall fibre quality.
Silk is a natural fibre produced from silkworm threads. While some silk materials are hybridised with other fibres to strengthen then and prolong their life, pure silk is delicate. The longevity of high-quality silk fibres can be prolonged by following a few simple steps when washing, storing and wearing silk materials.
Washing your Silk Scarf
Unintentional damage to your silk scarf is most likely to occur during the washing process, so be sure to only wash your scarf when necessary and follow all individual instructions provided by your scarf’s manufacturer.
Maintenance washes can be done once a month for scarves in regular, to remove facial oils, dirt and pollution trapped within the fabric. Spot washes can be done more often to treat stains. It is important to keep your scarf as clean as possible during wear, as regular washing can eventually cause colours to dull and fibres to break down.
So, how should you properly wash your scarf?
- Only wash using gentle detergents. Pre-treat stains before washing.
- Soak and gently hand wash in cool water. Do not use a washing machine.
- Never use harsh chemicals, as they can dissolve Silk fibres.
- Never mix colours. Perform a colour-fastness test before washing.
- Do not wring, rub or twist your scarf during washing.
- Air dry only in a flat hanging position. Do not use a drier.
Please note that some silk products are to be dry cleaned only; be sure to read any and all labelled instructions before attempting to wash your scarf at home. You can find a great instructional video on how to wash your silk scarf here
Storage
When not in use, your scarf should be stored in a cool, dry place. Make sure to place your scarf flat or hang evenly. As your collection grows you may want to keep all of your Silk products in one place, so you can better monitor their storage environment. Plus, their display will no doubt be beautiful!
- Airtight containers help to prevent avoid damage from insects or exposure.
- Avoid using mothballs, perfumes or insecticides, as the chemicals can bleach, dissolve or even break apart delicate Silk fibres.
- Herbal sachets are a great alternative to deter insects and keep your scarves smelling fresh.
When in Use
There are a number of precautions you can take to preserve your scarf when in use to avoid staining, fibre degeneration, and general wear and tear.
- Avoid direct exposure to heat, sunlight, perfumes and other chemicals.
- Keep away from food, drink and other spills that could stain or damage your scarf.
- Brooches, pins and patches should not be attached to silk fibres. Weight dragging on the material will eventually tear the strand
- If wrinkling occurs, dampen your scarf and gently iron on low heat.
- Make sure to store properly after use
